Cutting it down to size

May 4, 2013
I can't pretend I wasn't daunted by the enormity of reducing my 118500 word novel by 45000 words or so to make it marketable in the Middle Grade publishing world, but I went about it anyway.  At the end of about ten days of furious editing, I've completed my first pass of the book and reduced it to 99,700 words, a reduction of almost 19,000.

Most of this was achieved by simply going through sentences and trying to find a way to say the same thing in less words ("She had seen" becomes "She saw" etc) as well as removing the odd sentence that didn't seem to be adding anything to the story.  So I've dropped under the psychologicallally significant (for me) 100,000 word mark without any significant changes.  I was also amazed how many typos, omitted words and sentence fragments I found despite going through the whole manuscript about a dozen times and having several friends do line by line proofreading to boot.  The early drafts before anyone saw the book must have been made up of mostly errors!

I've now started the second pass and this will be a little more difficult.  I'm going to look for things I can safely take out of the book and keep for book two, as well as going over the earlier work to see if I missed anything.  The main issue is that I've gotten most of the low hanging fruit, so from here on in it becomes harder.  I need to lose about 25,000 words but not damage the characters or the plot so I think this will be slower going.  I have recourse to expert advice when I need it, but most of the work takes place on evenings so the less I have to ask, the better.

I'm just keeping in mind that the goal is to make the thing publishable and I have good reason to believe I'll get somewhere if I do, so that will keep me motivated enough to keep going. Ok. Back to page one.....

Mission change: Less is more.

April 26, 2013

What a difference speaking to someone with knowledge of the industry can make:-

One of the main problems I’ve had since writing the Chronomancer’s Daughter was that I never knew which age category it fitted into;  Middle Grade (9-12 or MG) or Young Adult (Teen or YA).   Now, after speaking to three literary agents I’m sure that it’s Middle Grade.

This presents a small problem as Young Adult books (especially fantasy) can run to over 100,000 words, but Middle Grade books are never ov...

Progress on all fronts

April 20, 2013
Things are looking very positive at the moment.  One of the agents that I met at the event in London (and gave my first three chapters to) emailed me on Friday telling me she'd enjoyed the first three chapters and would like to see the full manuscript (which I duly emailed to her minutes later).

In terms of writing, I've kept to my 5000 words per week target, 15,000 (eight chapters) so far, perhaps a fifth of a way through the first draft.  I've managed to prise myself off Twitter and Facebook...

A fab day at Bloomsbury

April 14, 2013
Yesterday I attended an event called "How to Hook an Agent" run by Bloomsbury, the publishers of Harry Potter and the Writer's and Artist's Yearbook.  I and another twenty something aspiring authors got to meet four very interesting and helpful literary agents, two of whom work with Children's fiction.

The day covered how your submissions should be structured and what agents look for. I was pleased to note that I was already doing the majority of things right and was the only person who had ac...

The ups and downs of the search for an agent.

April 10, 2013
Today has been a very mixed day in dealing with literary agents.  One of them came back last night saying that she had liked the idea but had not "connected with the voice" which I think means that she doesn't like my style (the precise opposite of the comments the last agent made) so the book wasn't for her.  She was very nice about it and I was grateful she'd taken the time to read it (she got back after four weeks which was good going), but I'd be lying if I said I felt great afterwards.

An...

So far, so good.

April 6, 2013
So far I've kept up with my self imposed challenge of 5000 words for the first week and it's looking good for week two with 4000 words written and 3 days to go.  If I can keep this up, then it's entirely feasible that I could have a working first draft of the Iron Golem within 3 months.

No news on the agent front.  I was hoping to have heard back from one of them just before Easter but nothing so far.  I know they all went to Bologna children's book fair the week before and it's entirely possi...

Mission accomplished

April 1, 2013
Well here we are a day ahead of the deadline and I've done just over 5600 words (20 pages) of the Iron Golem.  No doubt whatever I write will all have changed beyond recognition by the second draft, but it's important to get the words down (I just can't write out of sequence).  Already we've seen one cool new magical item and met a new and slightly dodgy character.

Lets' see if I can manage another 5000 by a week on tuesday.

Start as you mean to go on.

March 30, 2013
A good start to the Iron Golem.  I promised myself 5000 words by next tuesday and I'm at almost 3000 so far.  Added to the little bits I'd done already that puts me into chapter three (plus the prologue).  Some of it has been hard going (lots of potentially interesting distractions) but I forced myself to keep going and I'm quite pleased with the results.

Already totally off the reservation as far as the story plan goes, but that's not unusual.  The bits I've changed so far are the parts I t...

A very kind rejection

March 28, 2013
While thankfully not one of the two agents I'm waiting to hear back from about their requests to read my whole manuscript, I did recieve a reply from an agent I'd almost forgotten that I'd written to.  Her rejection was so nice, I've decided to share it.

Dear Russell,

Thank you for sending me PANDORA WOLFE: THE CHRONOMANCER'S DAUGHTER.

While I enjoyed reading your work, which stood out from the many we receive,
I’m afraid I didn’t feel strongly enough about the story to take it
further, althou...

Let's get started.

March 26, 2013
Made some progress on the short story tonight (2500 words in) but then felt it wasn't what I really wanted to be doing, so at long last, after much planning and procrastination, I've started writing the Iron Golem, the sequel to the Chronomancer's Daughter.

I'd already written a prologue some time ago but had been struggling with my plan for the first chapter as I felt it wasn't exciting enough.  In the event, I've totally re-planned the first chapter so we get into the action on the first pag...
